Nigeria Customs Service Reports Impressive First Quarter Performance: CGC Adeniyi Briefs Stakeholders

A comprehensive press briefing held at the CGC’s Conference Room in Abuja, the Comptroller General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi MFR, provided insights into the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) 2024 First Quarter Performance. The briefing, which took place on Wednesday, April 3, 2024, aimed to offer transparency, accountability, and insight into the operations of the NCS, while highlighting achievements, challenges, and strategic directions.

Tragic Incident and Moment of Silence

The briefing commenced with a solemn moment as Adeniyi addressed a tragic incident that occurred on February 23, 2024, at an NCS facility in Lagos. A stampede resulted in the loss of four lives as members of the public sought access to verify claims about shared food items. Adeniyi expressed condolences and observed a moment of silence in honor of the departed, emphasizing the NCS’s commitment to implementing measures to prevent such incidents in the future.

Overall Performance

Adeniyi reported remarkable performance in revenue collection during the first quarter of 2024. The NCS collected a total revenue of NGN 1,347,675,608,972.75, marking a substantial increase of 122.35% compared to the same period last year. Month-by-month analysis highlighted impressive growth, with January, February, and March witnessing significant revenue surges.

Suppression of Smuggling

The NCS recorded 572 seizures valued at NGN 10,593,099,654.50 in Duty Paid Value (DPV) during the first quarter. Notably, rice constituted 39% of the seizures, underscoring ongoing efforts to combat smuggling activities.

Trade Facilitation

Despite challenges, the NCS processed a total of 311,492 Single Goods Declarations (SGDs) for imports and 10,786 SGDs for exports during the first quarter. Efforts to streamline processes and enhance efficiency remain central to the NCS’s trade facilitation agenda.

Key Drivers

Adeniyi attributed the NCS’s successes to the dedication of officers, support from stakeholders, and government initiatives. The introduction of initiatives such as E-auction contributed to revenue generation, while collaboration with public and private sectors bolstered trade facilitation efforts.

Challenges and Mitigation Measures

Adeniyi acknowledged systemic challenges, including non-compliance, infrastructure limitations, and fluctuating exchange rates. The NCS is implementing measures to address these challenges, including consultations with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to mitigate exchange rate fluctuations.

Looking Ahead

The NCS outlined initiatives to enhance border enforcement, trade facilitation, and operational efficiency. Plans include the implementation of geospatial technology, the launch of the NCS Customs Analytical Laboratory, and the introduction of Advanced Rulings to provide clarity on customs procedures.

In closing, Adeniyi expressed gratitude to officers and stakeholders for their commitment and urged continued support as the NCS strives to fulfill its mandate. He emphasized the NCS’s determination to strengthen border security, streamline trade, and contribute to Nigeria’s economic advancement.

The press briefing provided valuable insights into the NCS’s performance and future plans, demonstrating a commitment to transparency, accountability, and excellence in service delivery.
