How US Imports Over 2 Million Barrels Jet Fuel from Dangote Refinery
Experts Hail Refinery, Call for Support
The United States has imported over two million barrels of jet fuel from the Dangote Petroleum Refinery in March, marking a significant milestone for Nigeria’s refining industry. According to ship-tracking service Kpler, six vessels carrying approximately 1.7 million barrels have already arrived at US ports, with an additional shipment of 348,000 barrels expected on March 29.
This development highlights Dangote Refinery’s growing influence in global fuel trading, as it competes with European refiners and emerges as a key supplier in the Atlantic Basin. Experts note that these exports could lower US jet fuel prices ahead of the summer travel season.
Economists and trade analysts have praised the refinery for boosting Nigeria’s international reputation and reducing foreign exchange outflow. Dr. Muda Yusuf, CEO of the Centre for the Promotion of Private Enterprises (CPPE), described the refinery’s success as a source of national pride, emphasizing the need for government and citizen support.
Public policy expert Dr. Abimbola Oyarinu lamented that Nigeria’s economy would be in better shape today if functional refineries had existed earlier. He warned against obstacles to local investments, urging policymakers to foster a more business-friendly environment.
Since its commencement in January 2024, Dangote Refinery has exported products to multiple continents, demonstrating its capacity to transform Nigeria’s role in the global oil market.
