Abati Tells Nicki Minaj: “Focus on Your Music, Stop Chasing Clout Over Nigeria’s Issues”
Former presidential aide Reuben Abati has criticized American rapper Nicki Minaj over her scheduled United Nations appearance addressing allegations of Christian genocide in Nigeria. Abati argued that the rapper is seeking unnecessary attention and lacks the grounding to speak on such a sensitive national issue.
Speaking on Arise News, Abati said Minaj should remain focused on her music career rather than weighing in on Nigeria’s internal matters. He suggested that if the U.S. is relying on influencers to discuss the situation, Nigeria should also position its own stars—like Tiwa Savage—to present a counter-narrative on national television during Minaj’s speech.
Minaj is expected to appear alongside U.S. Ambassador to the UN, Mike Waltz, who earlier announced plans to use her platform to highlight alleged persecution of Christians in Nigeria. While Minaj expressed gratitude for the opportunity, Abati insisted the matter is too serious for what he described as “clout chasing” by foreign celebrities.
