NOA: Why Tinubu Approves ₦10.3 Billion for Locally-Made Medications Diagnostic Kits
A bold move to strengthen Nigeria’s healthcare system, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved ₦10.3 billion for the bulk purchase of locally manufactured medications and diagnostic kits under the National Medical Relief Programme.
The initiative, spearheaded by Health Minister Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, aims to improve access to essential treatments, support local pharmaceutical production, create jobs, and provide relief to vulnerable Nigerians. The medical supplies will be distributed ward-by-ward across all 774 local government areas (LGAs) in the country.
In a significant milestone for African innovation, the programme will include diabetes diagnostic kits produced by a Lagos-based Nigerian company—marking the first of its kind on the continent. Additionally, the funding will facilitate the deployment of advanced medical equipment, such as mobile X-ray machines and CT scanners at regional hubs, enhancing healthcare services nationwide.
The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has described the initiative as a major step in reinforcing healthcare delivery and economic growth, emphasizing the government’s commitment to a self-sustaining medical sector.
With the slogan “For Us, By Us,” the programme underscores Nigeria’s push for health independence, ensuring that essential medical solutions are homegrown and widely accessible to citizens.
