BENUE MASSACRE: Fresh Update Over Killings Security Crackdown Interventions

A tragic wave of violence has swept through the Yelwata community in Guma Local Government Area of Benue State, as unidentified armed men unleashed a brutal attack on Friday night, killing over 150 people, burning homes, and displacing thousands.

Eyewitnesses recount that the attackers, heavily armed and chanting extremist slogans, stormed the community under the cover of darkness. Victims were reportedly trapped in their homes which were set ablaze, while others attempting to flee were gunned down in cold blood.

Local sources and humanitarian organizations estimate the death toll to be between 150 and 200, making this one of the deadliest attacks in Benue State in recent years. The assailants also destroyed properties and farmlands, leaving behind a trail of blood and despair. Over 6,500 residents have been rendered homeless, seeking refuge in nearby towns and IDP camps.

The attack, which bore similarities to previous herder-farmer clashes in the region, has reignited national outrage and calls for decisive action.

Presidential Response

Reacting to the carnage, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu condemned the killings as “senseless bloodletting” and directed the nation’s security chiefs to take urgent action to apprehend the perpetrators.

“Enough is enough,” the President declared. “The blood of our innocent citizens must not be spilled in vain. I have ordered security agencies to act decisively. Anyone found guilty of these barbaric acts, on any side of the conflict, must be arrested and prosecuted.”

President Tinubu is expected to visit Benue State on Wednesday to assess the situation firsthand and meet with victims and stakeholders.

Governor Alia Calls for Calm

Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, who met with the President in Abuja following the massacre, expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy and vowed to ensure justice is served. He has since deployed emergency response teams to provide aid and temporary shelter to the affected population.

The governor also confirmed that some local government staff were suspended over their alleged roles in mishandling earlier crises that led to further community tensions.

Senate, Military and Religious Communities React

In an emergency session, the Nigerian Senate called for immediate deployment of security operatives to vulnerable communities across Guma, Kwande, Ukum, and Katsina-Ala Local Government Areas. The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, raised concerns about internal sabotage within the military, stating that investigations are underway to identify possible collaborators.

The massacre has drawn reactions from around the globe. The Pope offered prayers for the victims and solidarity with Nigeria’s Christian population, while the Muslim Public Affairs Centre (MPAC) described the killings as “a national tragedy,” urging unity and compassion among all Nigerians.

Calls for State of Emergency

With emotions running high, youth-led protests have erupted in parts of Benue, demanding a declaration of a state of emergency. Protesters argue that the federal government must take stronger action to end the cyclical violence and provide lasting solutions.

A History of Pain

Benue State has remained a flashpoint in Nigeria’s long-running conflict between nomadic herders and sedentary farmers, a crisis often driven by competition for land, ethnic tensions, and weak law enforcement. Over the years, hundreds of lives have been lost in similar attacks, with communities left in perpetual mourning.

A recent report revealed that insecurity in the state has severely affected agricultural productivity, with a 1% rise in violence causing over 0.3% reduction in livestock production and 0.2% drop in crop yield.

Conclusion

As families mourn their loved ones and communities struggle to recover, there is growing national consensus that urgent, strategic, and inclusive measures are needed to prevent further bloodshed. The world watches as Nigeria faces another test of its will to protect its people and secure peace across its land.
