Polaris Bank, in partnership with the Nigeria Conservation Foundation (NCF), has launched a large-scale tree-planting initiative in Rivers State to combat carbon emissions and promote sustainable environmental practices.
The exercise, which took place at Bodo City Girls Secondary School in Gokana Local Government Area, underscores the Bank’s commitment to climate action and its broader sustainability agenda.
Speaking at the event, the Divisional Head, South-South, Polaris Bank, Mr. Raphael Abiaziem, represented by Mr. Ejike Aroh, Business Development Manager, Garrison Branch, emphasized the importance of the project. He noted that the initiative aligns with the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration and advances the Bank’s Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) priorities.
“This project is not just about planting trees; it is about safeguarding our environment, reducing carbon footprint, and raising awareness on climate action,” Abiaziem said. “By planting fruit-bearing and economic trees, we are helping communities build resilience, improve food security, and restore degraded ecosystems.”
Abiaziem added that climate change remains one of the world’s most urgent challenges, stressing that financial institutions like Polaris Bank must play a leadership role in driving collective action for a sustainable future.
The Nigeria Conservation Foundation commended Polaris Bank’s initiative, describing it as a vital contribution to environmental restoration. The trees planted, including avocado and native pear, are expected to serve multiple purposes—preventing soil erosion, providing shade, serving as windbreakers, and producing edible fruits for students and the host community.
NCF Field Officer, Mr. Alex Jorbedom, said the Foundation is targeting the planting of 500 trees within the school premises. “Each tree has been planted with protective mesh, and we will return to create further awareness so the students can appreciate their value and care for them properly,” he explained.
Polaris Bank’s broader sustainability roadmap integrates climate action, environmental conservation, and community development into its long-term growth strategy. Through partnerships such as this, the Bank continues to reinforce its role as a catalyst for positive environmental and social impact.
