The Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) Zone 2 has ushered in a new leadership era with the election of Ven. Dr. Samson Kunle Popoola (JP) as Chairman, following a peaceful and well-coordinated electoral exercise held at the Zone 2 Headquarters of the Nigeria Police.
The election, which commenced at about 9:30 a.m., saw the screening of 22 contestants drawn from Lagos State, Ogun State, and direct membership constituencies. The process, supervised by a seven-man electoral committee led by Elder Adekunle Adelaja, was widely described as seamless, owing to prior consensus and alignment among stakeholders, which resulted in unopposed candidates for all positions.
In his opening remarks, the Chairman of the Caretaker Committee, Alhaji Muhammad Jagunmo, commended contestants, delegates, and observers for adhering strictly to the laid-down guidelines, noting that their cooperation ensured a transparent and hitch-free process.
Ahead of the formal election, key incoming officers, including the Chairman, Deputy Chairman, and Vice Chairman, addressed stakeholders, outlining their vision for Zone 2—widely regarded as one of the most strategic and active zones in the national PCRC structure.
Presenting his agenda, Ven. Dr. Samson Kunle Popoola emphasized a transformative vision anchored on institutional rebranding, operational efficiency, and inclusivity. His blueprint includes the restructuring of the zonal PCRC framework, establishment of a fully functional office, aggressive membership drive, enhanced stakeholder engagement, and the revitalization of youth and women committees. He also pledged transparency and accountability in financial operations.
Central to his vision is the Unique Selling Proposition (USP) tagged “One Zone, One Voice,” which he described as a rallying call for unity and coordinated action across Lagos and Ogun States.
The election was conducted under the supervision of the National Chairman of PCRC, Alhaji Ibraheem Olaniyan, alongside other national officers, including the Deputy National Chairman (North), Ambassador Wada Idris, and the National Vice Chairman (South West), Prince Sunny Yemi Adenowo. The National Chairman reiterated the strategic importance of Zone 2 to the overall effectiveness of PCRC nationwide.
Following the election, the oath of office was administered by a legal practitioner, after which certificates were presented to the newly elected executives.
In his acceptance speech, Popoola reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening oversight functions across Lagos and Ogun States, ensuring Zone 2 plays a pivotal role at the national level, and expanding PCRC’s presence through the establishment of zonal units across both states. He also pledged sustained collaboration with police authorities and support for security formations within the zone.
The Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone 2, AIG Jimoh Olorundare, assured the committee of continued support, emphasizing the importance of community policing in enhancing security.
The event also featured the introduction of the Acting Chairman of Ogun State PCRC, Comrade Abdullahi Babatunde Lawal, recognized for his experience and deep understanding of the committee’s operations. Traditional leadership was represented by the Onimeko of Imekoland, HRM Oba Benjamin Alabi Olamide.
A solemn moment was observed with a minute of silence in honour of the immediate past Chairman of PCRC Zone 2, late Alhaji B.R.O. Balogun, in recognition of his contributions to the growth of the committee.
The successful conduct of the election and the emergence of a new leadership have been widely seen as a step forward in strengthening police-community relations and advancing grassroots security collaboration.
