NSA Ribadu Slams Canada Over Visa Denial to Nigeria’s Defence Chief, Military Officers

The National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu, has condemned the Canadian government over its decision to deny visas to Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, and other senior military officers. Ribadu described the move as “disrespectful” and declared that Canada “can go to hell.”

Speaking on Thursday at the maiden annual lecture of the National Association of the Institute for Security Studies in Abuja, Ribadu reacted to Musa’s revelation that he and some of his delegation were denied entry into Canada for an official engagement.

The CDS explained that the military delegation had been invited to an event honoring war veterans but was left stranded after the Canadian embassy refused visas to some members of the team.

“Every disappointment is a blessing. Yesterday, I was meant to be in Canada for an event to honor our veterans—those injured in battle. We were invited along with our team, but while half of us got visas, the other half was denied. It’s very disappointing,” Musa stated.

The Defence Chief emphasized that the incident should serve as a wake-up call for Nigeria to strengthen its sovereignty and self-reliance.

“This is a reminder that we must stand on our own, stand strong as a nation, and refuse to be taken for granted,” he said.

Reacting to the development, Ribadu commended the CDS for openly addressing the issue, urging Nigeria to prioritize its national strength rather than seeking validation from foreign governments.

“Thank you for the courage to say Canada denied you visas. They can go to hell,” Ribadu declared.

“Even though it’s painful and disrespectful, we are peaceful, we are strong, and I agree with you—it is time to fix our country. This is yet another reason we must work hard to make Nigeria work.”

The visa snub has sparked reactions within security and diplomatic circles, raising concerns over Nigeria’s global engagements and the treatment of its officials in international affairs. While Canada has yet to provide an official explanation for the decision, the incident underscores growing tensions in diplomatic relations.
