Nigeria Mourns Former Zambian President Edgar Chagwa Lungu, Commiserates with Zambia
The Federal Government of Nigeria has expressed heartfelt condolences to the Government and people of the Republic of Zambia over the passing of former President Edgar Chagwa Lungu, who died on Thursday, June 5, 2025, at the age of 68.
In an official statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nigeria lauded the late President Lungu for his dedicated leadership of Zambia from 2015 to 2021, during which he championed major developmental strides, promoted national unity, and upheld Zambia’s founding spirit of “One Zambia, One Nation.”
The late President Lungu is particularly remembered for his efforts in expanding Zambia’s infrastructure, strengthening regional diplomacy, and promoting inclusivity—most notably through the historic appointment of Zambia’s first female President. His administration also focused on economic diversification and national reconciliation.
“Nigeria acknowledges President Lungu’s contributions to strengthening Africa’s collective voice on the global stage and his commitment to regional solidarity,” said Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The Nigerian government affirmed its solidarity with the Lungu family, the Patriotic Front party, and the people of Zambia as they mourn a leader whose legacy echoes across the African continent.
“Nigeria joins the international community in celebrating his life and times,” the statement concluded. “May his gentle soul rest in peace.”
