Why Tinubu Appoints Muhammad Babangida Chairman Bank of Agriculture

In a sweeping move aimed at revitalizing key sectors of the Nigerian economy, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Muhammad Babangida, son of former military president General Ibrahim Babangida, as the Chairman of the newly restructured Bank of Agriculture (BoA).

The appointment, which was formally approved by the President on Thursday, marks a significant step in the administration’s broader strategy to reform institutions critical to food security, agribusiness financing, and rural development in Nigeria.

Muhammad Babangida, 53, brings a strong background in business and governance to the role. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and a Master’s degree in Public Relations and Business Communication from the European University in Montreux, Switzerland. He also completed an Executive Program on Corporate Governance at Harvard Business School in 2002, equipping him with global insights in financial leadership, transparency, and boardroom ethics.

The Bank of Agriculture, which has for years struggled with operational inefficiencies and a weak credit system, is seen as a critical institution in Nigeria’s food and economic ecosystem. Its revival under new leadership is expected to stimulate access to low-interest credit for farmers, support agribusiness entrepreneurs, and reduce Nigeria’s over-reliance on food imports.

President Tinubu’s decision to appoint a technocrat with global exposure signals his administration’s commitment to commercializing agriculture, attracting private investment into the sector, and unlocking the full potential of Nigeria’s agrarian economy.

This move comes at a time when inflationary pressures and rising food prices are threatening household incomes and national food security. With strategic leadership, the BoA can become a catalyst for agricultural transformation, rural industrialization, and job creation.

In addition to Babangida’s appointment, the President also approved seven other leadership changes across various agencies that are central to Nigeria’s economic, research, trade, and development strategy:

  • Lydia Kalat Musa Kaduna State – Chairman, Oil and Gas Free Zone Authority (OGFZA)
→ Expected to strengthen investment flows into Nigeria’s energy corridors.
  • Jamilu Wada Aliyu Kano State – Chairman, National Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC)
→ Tasked with enhancing the curriculum and aligning education with emerging economic needs.
  • Hon. Yahuza Ado Inuwa Kano State -Chairman, Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON)
→ Will drive standardization and product quality assurance for local and export markets.
  • Sanusi Musa (SAN) Kano State – Chairman, Institute of Peace and Conflict Resolution (IPCR)
→ Focused on promoting internal peace, vital for economic stability.
  • Prof. Al-Mustapha Alhaji Aliyu Sokoto State
  • – Director-General, Directorate of Technical Cooperation in Africa (DTCA)
→ Aims to foster regional economic partnerships across the continent.
  • Sanusi Garba Rikiji Zamfara State – Director-General, Nigerian Office for Trade Negotiations (NOTN)
→ To lead trade dialogue and bilateral negotiations, positioning Nigeria better in AfCFTA and WTO engagements.
  • Mrs Tomi Somefun Oyo State – Managing Director, National Hydro-Electric Power Areas Development Commission (HYPPADEC)
→ Expected to lead infrastructural development in hydroelectric zones, addressing energy poverty.
  • Dr Abdulmumini Mohammed Aminu-Zaria Kaduna State – Executive Director, Nigerian Integrated Water Resources Management Commission (NIWRMC)
→ Will oversee integrated water resource planning, crucial for irrigation and clean water access.

The appointments span multiple regions and sectors, reflecting the administration’s goal of inclusivity and national development. With portfolios ranging from agriculture and energy to education and trade, these leadership changes are poised to create ripple effects across Nigeria’s economic landscape.

The announcement was signed by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, and underscores the Tinubu administration’s accelerating reform agenda.

As Nigeria battles rising costs of living, food insecurity, and infrastructural decay, these appointments offer a glimpse into the President’s roadmap for economic transformation — one led by seasoned professionals with both local knowledge and global exposure.
