Ensuring Peace for Prosperity: Minister of Defence Pledges Security for South-East Businesses
A renewed sense of hope swept through the South-East region on Saturday, November 23, 2024 A mission of reassurance and commitment from the Honourable Minister of Defence, H.E. Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, CON, mni. The message was clear: security is not only a priority but a cornerstone for the economic growth and prosperity of the South-East.
Against the backdrop of persistent security challenges, the Minister’s visit resonated with optimism and resolve. Addressing troops of the 82 Division/Joint Task Force Operation Udo Ka, under Major General H.T. Dada, Badaru commended their tireless efforts to safeguard the region. “President Tinubu has mandated us to work tirelessly to bring lasting peace to every corner of Nigeria. Without peace, there can be no development, no thriving businesses,” he affirmed.
But the Minister’s approach was far from a top-down directive. In a series of engagements with traditional rulers, students, community leaders, and heads of security agencies, he sought local insights and collaborative solutions. “We need your voices, your ideas, and your support to strengthen security and promote the peace that this industrious region deserves,” he urged.
During his operational tour, the Minister visited strategic military installations, including the Nigerian Air Force Base in Emene, Enugu. His mission extended beyond words—demonstrating a personal commitment to assessing and enhancing the readiness of security forces in the region.
The visit also highlighted the deep connection between security and the South-East’s vibrant entrepreneurial spirit. From bustling markets to thriving small businesses, the region’s economic potential has long been tied to its stability. Retired Major General John Nwoga underscored another critical issue—how social media exacerbates insecurity through the spread of outdated or false information. “We must come together to combat fake news and its damaging effects,” he urged, calling for collective responsibility in safeguarding the region’s peace of mind.
In Imo State, where the Minister continued his tour on Friday, November 22, the message was equally inspiring. Meeting with troops at the FOB Okigwe, the 211 Quick Response Group of the Nigerian Air Force, and the Naval Base in Oguta, he delivered a personal message from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu: “Your dedication and successes are deeply appreciated. Together, we will overcome these challenges.”
A courtesy visit to Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma further cemented the government’s unified approach to security. The Minister expressed gratitude for the governor’s unwavering support to the 82 Division and the Joint Task Force. “Your efforts have made a significant difference, and our troops are deeply grateful,” he remarked.
As the festive season approaches, the stakes are higher. Major General Hassan Dada announced proactive measures by the Joint Task Force to ensure the safety of citizens returning home for Christmas. “Operation Udo Ka will provide the secure environment needed for our people to celebrate with peace of mind,” he assured.
The Ministry of Defence remains steadfast in its mission to restore peace, promote development, and create an environment where businesses and communities can flourish. In the words of Minister Badaru, “The South-East deserves nothing less than security, peace, and prosperity.”
