NIMC: Nigeria Digital ID4D Project Engages Online Publishers in Push for Inclusive Identity System

A significant step toward fostering collaboration with the media, the Project Implementation Unit (PIU) of the Nigeria Digital Identification for Development (ID4D) Project convened a two-day roundtable with online newspaper publishers at The Zone, Gbagada, Lagos. The event, led by Engr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote, DG/ CEO, NIMC identifies the critical role of digital media in driving awareness and participation in Nigeria’s digital identity initiative.

Speaking at the opening session, The project Implementation Unit Coordinator, Mrs. Tito Ejenavi highlighted the transformative vision of the Nigeria Digital ID4D Project, as collaborative effort funded by the World Bank, the European Investment Bank, and the French Development Agency. A project that seeks to increase the number of Nigerians with a National Identity Number (NIN) through a robust and inclusive foundational identity system.

“Our mission is rooted in the principle of inclusion,” Mrs. Ejenavi stated, emphasizing the project’s focus on ensuring that vulnerable groups—including women, children, persons with disabilities, internally displaced persons (IDPs), refugees, and migrants—are not left behind in the national identity enrollment process.

She noted that historical challenges, such as logistical barriers and social stigmas, have often excluded marginalized populations from identity systems. By addressing these barriers, the Nigeria Digital ID4D Project aims to create a more equitable and accessible identity framework, enhancing access to essential services and supporting national development.

The foundational ID system, implemented by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) with support from the Nigeria Digital ID4D Project, is designed to protect Nigerians’ fundamental right to a verifiable identity. This system plays a pivotal role in strengthening the country’s digital economy, improving data protection, and closing inclusion gaps that hinder access to critical services.

Mrs. Ejenavi praised the leadership of NIMC’s Director General, Engr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote, for her results-driven approach to advancing the project’s goals. “Her leadership has been instrumental in making the national identity system more sustainable, robust, and inclusive,” she remarked.

Addressing the publishers of online newspapers, Mrs. Ejenavi emphasized the strategic importance of their platforms in shaping public opinion and combating misinformation about the national identity system. “Your platforms reach millions of Nigerians daily, making you indispensable partners in our mission to build a more inclusive and digitally empowered Nigeria,” she said.

The roundtable aimed to strengthen NIMC’s relationship with digital media, enhance the commission’s visibility, communicate success stories, and promote valuable partnerships. Mrs. Ejenavi called for continued collaboration with the media to disseminate accurate and verifiable information, encouraging all Nigerians to participate in the digital identity project.

As the event unveils its first day, Mrs. Ejenavi reiterated the importance of unity in advancing Nigeria’s digital identity agenda. “Let us work together to ensure that no Nigerian is left behind in the country’s digital identity project,” she urged.

The roundtable is expected to generate actionable insights and strategies for deepening public awareness and participation in the National Identity Management Commission’s transformative initiatives.
