The West Africa Economic Summit (WAES) officially opened today in Abuja with a resounding call for deeper regional integration and economic transformation, as Nigeria hosts the maiden edition of what is poised to become a flagship platform for shaping the future of trade and investment across West Africa.

In a stirring welcome address, the Honourable Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Her Excellency Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, described the summit as a “landmark moment” that affirms the region’s shared resolve to unlock its immense economic potential and drive collective prosperity through purposeful collaboration.

“This gathering is a bold affirmation of our region’s collective will to deepen economic cooperation… and craft a future of shared prosperity for the peoples of West Africa,” she declared, speaking on behalf of the Federal Government of Nigeria and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The two-day summit, holding from June 20 to 21, 2025, has drawn participation from regional leaders, investors, policymakers, diplomats, private sector players, and development institutions, making it one of the most significant multilateral engagements focused on intra-African economic growth.

Ambassador Odumegwu-Ojukwu emphasized West Africa’s historical interconnectedness, shaped by centuries of trade, migration, and cultural exchange. She described the WAES as a platform of purpose—where policy meets enterprise and where leadership embraces innovation to speak with one voice for the region’s economic future.

“Our nations have long engaged not merely as neighbours, but as sisters, brothers, and comrades,” she said. “Bound by a unique thread that extends across a vast diaspora, uniquely positioning us as leaders on the global stage.”

Visionary Goals for a New Economic Era

The Minister underscored the summit’s alignment with key continental blueprints including ECOWAS Vision 2050, the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), and the African Union’s Agenda 2063. She identified persistent structural and policy barriers—such as weak infrastructure, institutional gaps, and incoherent trade policies—as major hurdles to seamless integration.

“It is by breaking down trade bottlenecks, strengthening institutions, improving infrastructure, and enhancing policy coherence that we can turn West Africa into a globally competitive economic bloc,” she noted.

Reiterating Nigeria’s commitment to regional prosperity, Ambassador Odumegwu-Ojukwu assured that the country remains dedicated to promoting an open, secure, and investor-friendly climate. She highlighted the government’s support for industrial growth, digital innovation, youth and women participation, and value chain development as key drivers of economic transformation.

“We welcome strategic partnerships that support innovation and the full participation of women and youth in our economic journey,” she said.

While acknowledging West Africa’s proven successes in banking, agriculture, digital services, and extractives, the Minister urged participants to move beyond theory and commit to far-sighted integration policies that secure the region’s economic sovereignty.

“We are not here to debate how to build industries—we have already shown that we can. The task before us is to drive their expansion through reforms that reinforce our shared identity and economic strength.”

One of the address’s most powerful themes was inclusivity. Ambassador Odumegwu-Ojukwu stressed that WAES is a summit for all West African countries, irrespective of existing institutional alignments. She urged a united front in confronting economic challenges and embracing the opportunities that the future holds.

“This initiative reflects Nigeria’s steadfast commitment to inclusive, region-wide collaboration,” she concluded.

As Day 1 of the summit unfolds with high-level panel discussions and bilateral engagements, all eyes remain on Abuja—the heart of a new economic conversation that may redefine the trajectory of West Africa.
