The academic community of Covenant University has been thrown into mourning following the sudden death of a 500-level student, Toluwase Jesutunmise, who collapsed during a football training session on campus.

The incident, which occurred on Monday, has sparked renewed conversations around student health monitoring and the adequacy of emergency response systems in tertiary institutions.

In an official statement released on Wednesday, the university confirmed that the late student had actively participated in the training before stepping aside after complaining of leg pain and fatigue. Moments later, teammates reportedly noticed he was gasping for breath, prompting an immediate emergency response.

He was swiftly taken to the university’s medical centre, located near the training ground, where medical personnel initiated resuscitation procedures, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED). Despite these efforts, he was pronounced dead upon arrival at the emergency unit.

The Vice-Chancellor, Timothy Anake, described the deceased as a diligent and vibrant student whose passing represents a profound loss to the institution.

Preliminary findings by the university suggest that a previously undisclosed heart condition may have been the underlying cause of the incident. The institution emphasized that there was no negligence on the part of its medical team, noting that all required emergency equipment was available and promptly deployed.

University management also disclosed that it has maintained close contact with the bereaved family since the incident and continues to provide necessary support during this difficult period.

The tragic loss has left students, staff, and the wider university community in deep grief, as calls intensify for enhanced health screening and proactive medical monitoring of students engaged in physically demanding activities.
