Osun Governor Raises Alarm Over Alleged Plot to Disrupt Local Council Elections
Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, has raised concerns over an alleged plot by opposition parties to incite violence ahead of the local council elections scheduled for Saturday, February 22, 2025.
In a statement released on Thursday in Osogbo, the state capital, the Governor’s spokesperson, Mallam Olawale Rasheed, claimed that “credible reports” indicated a plan by certain opposition elements to launch attacks on local government secretariats across the state. He further alleged that these individuals were also planning to target leaders of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and key government officials in an attempt to create unrest.
Governor Adeleke warned that the purported scheme was designed to disrupt the upcoming elections and push for the declaration of a state of emergency in Osun. He emphasized that any individual caught attempting to disturb public order would face the full force of the law.
“Osun remains one of the most peaceful states in the federation,” the Governor stated. “It is disheartening to see the desperation of opposition politicians, particularly the All Progressives Congress (APC), which is now engaging in fake court rulings, fabricated news, and misleading narratives instead of focusing on the electorate.”
Adeleke reaffirmed the validity of a previous court judgment secured by the Action Peoples Party (APP), which nullified the local government elections held in 2022 under the APC-led administration. He clarified that the recent Court of Appeal ruling in Akure had no bearing on the subsisting judgment that had sacked the former council chairmen and councilors from office.
In response to the alleged threats, the Governor disclosed that he had instructed security agencies to secure the state and arrest any individuals attempting to instigate violence. “There is no legal basis for any attempt to take over the local government system in Osun State. Elections to fill these offices are scheduled for February 22nd,” he said.
Governor Adeleke assured residents of their safety, urging them to continue their daily activities without fear. “The government is fully in control. We are committed to maintaining peace and ensuring that Osun State remains secure from anti-democratic elements,” he concluded.
