In a bold move to deepen community development and reduce poverty at the grassroots level, Otunba Kehinde Almaroof Oloyede, Executive Chairman of Oshodi-Isolo Local Government, is set to roll out a mega empowerment programme in May, targeting no fewer than 5,000 residents.
This initiative underscores the growing recognition that grassroots empowerment is pivotal to addressing economic hardship, unemployment, and social inequality. As Nigeria continues to grapple with the harsh realities of inflation and dwindling job opportunities, local interventions such as this are lifelines for thousands of families struggling to survive.
Sustained Commitment to Uplift the People
Since assuming office, Chairman Oloyede has consistently demonstrated a people-first approach to governance. From infrastructure projects to human capacity development, his administration has maintained a steady focus on equipping residents with tools to earn a living and become self-reliant. The upcoming mega empowerment programme will further consolidate these gains.
Through previous skill acquisition programmes at the council’s UNDP centre, several youths and women have already benefited from training in areas such as tailoring, household chemical production, hairdressing, makeup artistry, and more. These programmes didn’t end with training—beneficiaries were empowered with start-up tools, positioning them to transform their skills into sustainable ventures.
Lifting from the Bottom-Up: A Model for Inclusive Growth
The forthcoming mega empowerment initiative promises to be one of the most comprehensive grassroots interventions in the local government’s history. Items to be distributed include:
- Deep freezers
- POS machines
- Generators
- Tricycles (Kẹkẹ Marwa)
- Motorcycles (Okada)
- Sewing machines
- Hair dryers
- Barbing kits
- Grinding machines
- Gas cookers
- Makeup boxes, and more.
Beyond the provision of tools, the programme has been strategically structured to ensure even and fair distribution across various interest groups. Beneficiaries will include the Community Development Committees, Artisans, Youths, Ethnic Associations, and Faith-Based Organizations such as the League of Imams and Alfas and the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN).
Tackling Poverty with Purpose
Chairman Oloyede emphasized that the core goal of the empowerment is to alleviate poverty, especially among the most vulnerable in society. “We are committed to giving back to our people because they are the reason we are in office. It is our duty to ensure that our residents do not just survive, but thrive,” he noted.
Setting the Pace in Local Governance
The Oshodi-Isolo example showcases how local government can serve as a transformative engine when driven by vision, empathy, and integrity. By investing in human capital and enabling economic independence, Otunba Oloyede’s administration is not just empowering individuals but strengthening families, communities, and the local economy.
As 5,000 residents prepare to benefit from this initiative, the ripple effect will likely extend far beyond the distribution day. It signals a shift in the narrative—where local governments become true enablers of progress, not just administrators of taxes and roads.
The impact of this mega empowerment will not only be measured in goods distributed but in dignity restored, livelihoods improved, and dreams reignited.
