Stolen Assets: Nigeria Receives Repatriation $52.88m from Diezani Alison-Madueke’s Galactica Assets: Key Details

The United States government has repatriated $52.88 million linked to Nigeria’s former Petroleum Resources Minister, Diezani Alison-Madueke, marking a significant development in Nigeria’s anti-corruption drive. The funds, recovered from the forfeiture of the Galactica assets tied to Alison-Madueke and her associates, were returned through a formal Asset Return Agreement signed in Abuja on Friday.

The U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Richard Mills Jnr., led a delegation to the Federal Ministry of Justice headquarters for the signing ceremony. Representing the Nigerian government was the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, who highlighted the importance of the event in President Bola Tinubu’s anti-corruption agenda.

“This repatriation is a significant affirmation of our collective resolve to build a Nigeria free from the shackles of corruption,” Fagbemi stated, emphasizing that the funds would be applied transparently to benefit the nation’s socio-economic development.

The $52.88 million will be deployed toward critical developmental projects in Nigeria:

   – $50 million will be managed through the World Bank to improve the reliability and availability of renewable energy in rural areas.

   – This initiative aims to enhance energy access, which is critical for the development of underserved communities.

   – $2.88 million will be granted to the International Institute for Justice (IIJ) for capacity-building projects targeting criminal justice sector practitioners across East, West, and North Africa.

   – The funds will bolster efforts to combat terrorism and strengthen the rule of law in these regions.

Fagbemi assured stakeholders that mechanisms have been established to ensure the funds are disbursed transparently. Regular reports will be submitted by the World Bank and IIJ to both the Nigerian and U.S. governments, detailing the progress and impact of the projects.

Ambassador Mills Jnr. lauded Nigeria’s efforts in combating corruption and expressed confidence in the government’s ability to effectively utilize the funds. He noted that the U.S. decision to return the assets was based on trust in Nigeria’s commitment to ensuring the funds directly benefit its citizens.

“This agreement represents a significant milestone in the collaboration between our governments to combat corruption, uphold the rule of law, and recover stolen assets,” Mills said.

The return of these funds underscores the importance of international cooperation in tackling corruption. It also sends a strong message about the consequences of misappropriating public resources.

The repatriation marks another chapter in the ongoing effort to recover stolen assets and use them for the greater good of Nigeria’s citizens. It is a testament to the shared commitment of Nigeria and the U.S. to uphold transparency, accountability, and justice.
