Tincan Island Port Command Achieves Record Revenue and Enforcement Success in 2024 First Half

The Tincan Island Port Command (TCIP) of the Nigeria Customs Service has released its Half Year Revenue and Performance Report for the period January 1 to June 31, 2024. The report highlights significant achievements in revenue generation, trade facilitation, and enforcement/anti-smuggling activities, aligned with the theme of the 2024 International Customs Day: “Customs Engaging Traditional and New Partners with Purpose.”

TCIP reported a remarkable revenue collection of ₦575.51 billion for the first half of 2024. This marks an increase of ₦315.25 billion (221.13%) compared to the ₦260.26 billion collected in the same period in 2023. The Command attributes this success to enhanced operational processes and the use of technology like the NICIS II Software, which facilitated efficient risk management and cargo clearance.

The enforcement unit of TCIP has been vigorous in combating smuggling and other illegal activities. Significant seizures included:

– 12 rifles of various types and 6 pistols.

– A used Toyota Corolla (2014 model).

– Illicit substances valued at ₦3.22 billion, including 1,072 kg of Cannabis Indica.

– ₦964.34 million worth of codeine-based cough syrup and Diclofenac Sodium tablets.

Exports through Tincan Island Port in the first half of 2024 saw a substantial increase in FOB value, reaching ₦1.03 trillion, compared to ₦182.33 billion in the same period of 2023. The volume of exported goods also rose to 489,594.50 metric tons from 291,436.00 metric tons. Soya beans were the highest export commodity, valued at ₦92.06 billion, while self-adhesive products were the lowest at ₦17.56 million.

TCIP has actively engaged with stakeholders, including shipping companies, terminal operators, and barge operators, to streamline processes and reduce revenue loss. The Command also facilitated dispute resolution and addressed stakeholder complaints through the Dispute Resolution Committee and Helpdesk.

The ongoing construction of port access and terminal roads, along with the use of barges for cargo movement, aims to further enhance trade facilitation. The anticipated implementation of the e-Customs project and smart technology installations at the ports are expected to significantly boost TCIP’s operational capacity.
