Nestlé Pure Life Reinforces Sustainability Commitment with Clear Cap Innovation

Advancing the sustainability agenda, Nestlé Nigeria has unveiled a new clear cap design for its Pure Life bottled water range, eliminating the traditional blue-colored caps to enhance recyclability and support the circular economy.

The innovation, first introduced with the 33cl Nestlé Pure Life bottle, is now extended across all bottle sizes excluding the Nestlé Pure Life Protect variant underscoring the company’s mission to reduce plastic waste and design with the environment in mind.

According to Olutayo Olatunji, Business Executive Officer, Nestlé Waters:

“The clear cap isn’t just a design update; it is a reflection of our deeper commitment to sustainability. From being the first and only water brand to introduce 50% rPET (recycled polyethylene terephthalate) in our bottles—which cuts virgin plastic use by half—to now eliminating colored bottle caps, every step we take is intentional. Our goal is a 360-hydration experience that prioritizes both people and the planet.”

Clear caps simplify the recycling process by allowing waste management partners to easily sort and repurpose bottle components. Colored plastics, though functional, often complicate recycling due to dye contamination. By removing the blue pigment, Nestlé is not only helping recyclers but also educating consumers on the importance of sustainable packaging.

Victoria Uwadoka, Corporate Communications, Public Affairs and Sustainability Lead, Nestlé Nigeria, added:

“At Nestlé, sustainability is not a buzzword; it is a responsibility. This innovation demonstrates how we think beyond function to impact. We are designing packaging that benefits consumers, supports recycling infrastructure, and protects our environment.”

The initiative aligns with Nestlé’s global target of ensuring 100% of its packaging is recyclable or reusable by 2025. It also strengthens local sustainability practices in Nigeria, offering consumers a more responsible hydration experience while preserving natural resources for future generations.
