Apapa Customs Sets New Revenue Records with N1.2 Trillion Collection in First Seven Months of 2024
The Apapa Port Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has reported a historic revenue collection of N1.2 trillion between January and July 2024, marking a new milestone in its financial achievements. This impressive total includes a record-breaking N201.8 billion collected in July alone, the highest monthly collection in the history of the NCS.
Customs Area Controller, Comptroller Babatunde Olomu, announced these figures on Wednesday, expressing his commitment to surpassing these records in the coming months. “Our revenue for the first seven months of 2024 is higher than the total revenue collected for the entire twelve months of 2023,” Olomu stated, highlighting a significant increase in financial performance under his leadership.
The remarkable revenue growth is attributed to the effective implementation of the Comptroller General of Customs’ thrust on the time release study to facilitate trade without delays. Olomu emphasized that this strategy has been instrumental in achieving these outstanding results.
“I am optimistic about the possibility of beating this record as we look forward to surpassing it in the months to come,” Olomu said. “For the first seven months of 2024, the Apapa Area Command generated a total of N1,227,431,323,016.24. This figure exceeds the total collected revenue in 2023, which was N1,172,414,793,960.32.”
Key interventions from the Tariff and Trade Department have played a crucial role in this success. Olomu noted the reinvigoration of various units, including the compliance desk, dispute resolution team, Valuation, PCA, and CIU, with regular evaluations to ensure progress.
“We are committed to doing more in line with the directives and motivating examples of the Comptroller General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi,” Olomu added. The Apapa Command, which handles the highest volume of trade for the NCS, is expected to meet high standards of performance and revenue collection.
In preparation for potential disruptions due to nationwide protests, Comptroller Olomu met with stakeholders at the port to assure them of the Customs’ continuous availability and service. This proactive move has bolstered the confidence of port users.
Olomu also urged Apapa port users to engage in legitimate trade and reiterated the command’s dedication to detecting all forms of concealment and minimizing revenue leakage.
