LASTMA Boosts Night-Time Traffic Operations Ahead of New Year Celebrations

Clears Multiple Collisions at Ikoyi and Lekki-Ajah, Rescues Accident Victim at Gbagada Bridge

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has intensified its night-time traffic control and monitoring efforts across major commercial hubs in the state as part of its preparation for the New Year celebrations.  

Key areas targeted include Lekki-Ajah, Ikoyi, Victoria Island, and other high-traffic zones, where the agency has implemented strategies to ensure the smooth flow of vehicles during the festive season and the anticipated surge in traffic in the days following.  

General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, who supervised the nocturnal operations, affirmed the agency’s commitment to maintaining order and ensuring uninterrupted traffic flow across Lagos’ critical corridors. He praised LASTMA personnel for their vigilance and dedication during these extended hours of traffic management.  

Speaking on motorists’ responsibilities, Mr. Bakare-Oki emphasized the need for road users to strictly adhere to the provisions of the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law of 2018. He urged drivers to exercise discipline and responsibility, stressing that compliance is essential to ensure the safety of all road users and the efficient operation of Lagos’ transport systems.  

As part of its intensified operations, LASTMA personnel cleared five multiple collisions in the Ikoyi and Lekki-Ajah areas during night-time traffic surveillance. The swift interventions helped prevent prolonged disruptions and ensured smooth transit for motorists navigating these busy areas.  

In a related development, LASTMA officers operating near the Gbagada Bridge, ascending from Iyana-Oworonsoki, rescued a young woman involved in a severe solo accident. Preliminary investigations revealed that the Toyota Matrix (registration JJJ 165 FG) carrying five occupants had veered off course and collided with a culvert due to intoxication on the part of the driver.  

The injured woman, who sustained a deep laceration to her left hand, was promptly transported to a nearby medical facility for treatment. Security personnel provided assistance during the rescue operation, ensuring the scene was managed effectively.  

Mr. Bakare-Oki reiterated LASTMA’s unwavering commitment to keeping Lagos roads safe, orderly, and navigable during the festive period. He assured residents and visitors that the agency’s proactive measures would offer an unobstructed travel experience across the city’s bustling streets.
