Flash Flood Hits Ondo Kingdom: Governor Aiyedatiwa Orders Immediate Evacuation, Dredging
A devastating flash flood swept through parts of Ondo Kingdom on Friday, prompting Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa to order the immediate evacuation of affected areas. The state government has also pledged to take swift action to prevent further damage.
The State Commissioner for Environment, Hon. Oyeniyi Oseni, revealed that the government had anticipated the flood, as predicted by NIMET, and had deployed Amphibious Excavators to critical erosion-prone areas for dredging.
“We have been working in Ondo kingdom for the past two weeks, focusing on Laje and Oke-Odunwo, which are the most critical erosion-prone locations,” Oseni stated.
Additionally, dredging activities have been carried out in Akure, Igbokoda, and Ore.
Oseni emphasized the urgent need to further dredge canals along Captain Cook up to the sawmill area of Ondo, which commenced on Saturday.
The commissioner attributed the flooding to unauthorized development on waterways in an Estate at Fagun and along Ife road.
To address this, the Environment Ministry will collaborate with relevant authorities to halt unlawful development along waterways.
