Impeachment: Concerned Senators Passes Vote of Confidence in Senate President Godswill Akpabio Amidst Impeachment Rumors

The Nigerian Senate has passed a vote of confidence in Senate President Godswill Akpabio, following reports of an alleged plot to impeach him. The motion for the vote of confidence was raised by Senator Abdul Ningi, representing Bauchi Central, a day after rumors emerged about moves to remove Akpabio from office.

The rumors had sparked concerns within the Senate, particularly among northern senators, with some reports suggesting they were behind the purported plan to oust the Senate President. This prompted Yahaya Abdullahi, Senator representing Kebbi North, to raise a point of privilege, stating that his rights had been violated by these allegations. Abdullahi, a senior member of the Senate and part of the Northern Senators Forum, refuted claims that northern senators were plotting against Akpabio.

“I am a northern senator, and my privilege has been breached by these allegations,” Abdullahi stated. “I am a senior member of this chamber and a member of the Northern Senators Forum. I can tell you that there is no attempt that I know of by a caucus or any group among northern senators to remove the Senate President.”

In response to Abdullahi’s remarks, Senator Ningi expressed that if there were any dissatisfaction with Akpabio’s leadership, the senators would directly address him. He then proposed a motion for the Senate to reaffirm their confidence in Akpabio’s leadership, as well as that of the Deputy Senate President and the entire leadership of the National Assembly.

“I move that we impose a vote of confidence in you as the Senate President, in the Deputy Senate President, and in the entire leadership of the National Assembly,” Ningi stated.

The motion was subsequently put to a voice vote by Akpabio, and it was overwhelmingly adopted, putting an end to the impeachment speculation and reinforcing the Senate’s support for its leadership.

This vote of confidence serves as a strong message from the Senate, affirming Akpabio’s position and the stability of the Senate’s leadership, despite the controversies surrounding his leadership.
