Tragic Accident on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway: LASTMA Officials Provide Details

In a somber incident reported by operatives of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), a fatal accident occurred along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. The unfortunate incident involved a reckless commercial Volkswagen bus (EKY 558 YG) that collided with a moving commercial motorcycle at the Bolade Intersection inward Oshodi.

Mr. Adebayo Taofiq, Director of the Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of LASTMA, confirmed that a passenger lost their life instantly in the collision, while the motorcycle rider sustained serious injuries, being trapped under the commercial bus.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the commercial Volkswagen bus driver, known for a notorious driving record, was speeding and disregarded a traffic light at the Bolade Intersection. The impact resulted in the collision with the moving commercial motorcycle carrying a passenger.

LASTMA’s Durojaiye Musefiu ‘Bravo’ (Zone 20 P. W. D), who was on a traffic monitoring patrol around Oshodi, emphasized that the accident could have been avoided if the commercial bus driver had adhered to the traffic light regulations at Bolade Intersection.

The tragic incident led to the instant death of the male passenger on the commercial motorcycle, while Lastma officials worked diligently to rescue the trapped rider with serious injuries.

LASAMBUS personnel swiftly moved the deceased passenger’s body, and the injured rider to an appropriate facility. The commercial bus driver, responsible for the fatal accident, was handed over to the Akinpelu Police Division by LASTMA officials.

Mr. Bakare-Oki Olalekan, the General Manager of LASTMA, visited the accident scene and issued a stern warning to commercial bus drivers, urging them to refrain from overspeeding and to consistently obey traffic regulations set by the Government across the State. He also appealed to motorcycle operators to avoid using bridges, highways, and all restricted routes throughout the State.

This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of road safety and the need for all road users to adhere to traffic rules for the well-being of everyone on the road.
