LASG TASKS WORKFORCE ON CIRCULAR ECONOMY PRACTICES, LAUNCHES WASTE VALORISATION CENTRE

The Lagos State Government has taken a decisive step toward environmental sustainability by launching a Waste-to-Value collection hub, reinforcing its commitment to circular economy principles. Civil servants were charged with the responsibility of serving as change agents, fostering economic transformation, and shaping a sustainable future through active participation in waste valorization.

The initiative, tagged Charity Begins At Home 2.0, was spearheaded by the Office of the Special Adviser on Climate Change and Circular Economy. It was launched at the Quadrant Car Park in the Secretariat, Alausa, Ikeja, a strategic location housing key ministries such as Economic Planning and Budget, Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, and Youth and Social Development, among others.

### **Driving Awareness and Participation**

To mark the launch, a roadshow was conducted within the secretariat complex to raise awareness about the Waste-to-Value collection hub. This innovative facility is designed as a well-structured, containerized space with clearly marked points of exchange. Civil servants can swap recyclable waste such as PET bottles, tin cans, paper, cartons, and textiles in return for financial benefits and structured financial aid programs.

Performing the launch, the Lagos State Head of Service, Mr. Olabode Agoro, emphasized that the initiative is not merely a policy directive but a strategic economic empowerment tool.

“It is a moral, economic, and strategic imperative. By adopting waste-to-value models, we empower ourselves with innovative pathways for financial stability, resource optimization, and environmental stewardship,” he stated.

Agoro further highlighted that waste valorization serves as a viable means to reduce reliance on landfills, thereby preserving the environment for future generations. He urged public servants to embrace their role in championing green policies within their workplaces and communities.

Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget, Mr. Ope George, underscored the importance of collective efforts in driving the circular economy forward.

“This is not just a government initiative; it is a movement that requires the active participation of civil servants, private sector players, environmental advocates, and every resident of Lagos. The circular economy thrives on collaboration, innovation, and sustainability. We must all embrace these principles in our daily lives,” he noted.

Encouraging engagement, he urged civil servants to explore innovative steps that align with circular economy ideals and drive Lagos State’s sustainability agenda.

The Role of Civil Servants in Environmental Change

Special Adviser to Governor Sanwo-Olu on Climate Change and Circular Economy, Mrs. Titi Oshodi, pointed out that Lagos State’s workforce of over 5,000 employees presents a unique opportunity for widespread influence.

“Our civil servants must not only be climate-conscious but also recognize the economic benefits of fostering environmentally sustainable landscapes. Their engagement can trigger a multiplier effect, encouraging families and communities to adopt similar practices,” she explained.

Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Mrs. Cecila Dada, reinforced the empowerment potential of waste valorization within the public service. She emphasized that it offers financial benefits while simultaneously promoting sustainable environmental practices.

The event also attracted notable Nollywood actors, including Foluke Daramola-Salako, Ayo Adesanya, Sola Kosoko, Bidemi Kosoko, and Razak Owokoniran. Their presence underscored the importance of celebrity advocacy in reinforcing environmental sustainability messages.
