In a historic move to honour the legacy of former President Muhammadu Buhari, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the renaming of the University of Maiduguri to Muhammadu Buhari University of Maiduguri, recognising Buhari’s significant contributions to national development and education.
The announcement was made during a special session of the expanded Federal Executive Council (FEC) held on July 17, 2025, convened by President Tinubu to pay tribute to the late Nigerian leader. The session included a touching video documentary chronicling President Buhari’s life, achievements, and legacy, with national leaders, ministers, and family members in attendance.
The Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa (CON),speaking on behalf of the ministry and the entire education sector, expressed profound appreciation to President Tinubu for what he described as a “statesmanlike decision” to permanently enshrine Buhari’s name in the nation’s educational history.
“President Tinubu’s decision reflects not only deep empathy and respect but also a firm belief in education as the bedrock of national development,” said Dr. Alausa.
President Buhari’s administration (2015–2023) was widely regarded for sweeping reforms in national security, anti-corruption, agriculture, infrastructure, and particularly human capital development. Signature initiatives such as the Anchor Borrowers’ Programme, TSA, ERGP, and various social investment schemes were highlighted as milestones that improved national stability and progress.
Speaking on behalf of the Buhari family, Yusuf Buhari, the late President’s son, expressed gratitude for the gesture, noting the symbolic value of the recognition in sustaining his father’s legacy.
The Ministry of Education emphasized that this renaming is a strong affirmation of education as a cornerstone for sustainable development and national identity, reiterating its commitment to upholding the values of service, integrity, and excellence championed by both President Muhammadu Buhari and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The renaming of the university in Borno State signifies not just a tribute, but a national recognition of the enduring impact of Buhari’s leadership and commitment to education-driven transformation.
