Lagos Police Addresses Omole Estate Viral Video Highlights Needs for Responsible Reporting
The Lagos State Police Command has responded to a viral video making rounds on social media, which shows estate security personnel at Omole Estate allegedly preventing uniformed police officers from gaining access to the premises. The Command has clarified that the officers involved in the incident are not personnel from the Lagos State Police Command.
According to a statement released by the Command’s spokesperson, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, preliminary investigations reveal that the officers featured in the footage were on escort and protection duty from police formations outside Lagos State.
While distancing itself from the conduct of the officers, the Command strongly condemned the act of obstructing law enforcement officers from performing their lawful duties, describing such actions as unlawful and punishable under the laws of Nigeria.
“Police officers are empowered by law to use minimum force necessary to carry out their duties in the protection of lives and property. Any form of obstruction constitutes lawlessness,” the statement emphasized.
The Command also expressed concern that the management of Omole Estate chose to circulate the video on social media instead of reporting the incident to the appropriate police authorities. “Resorting to self-help by taking to social media to malign the police is not only unprofessional but also undermines the integrity of due process,” the Command stated.
While no officer of the Lagos Command has been identified in the footage, the Command reiterated its stance on transparency and accountability, assuring residents that any officer found culpable of misconduct would face disciplinary action.
In a bid to ensure proper investigation and resolution, the Command has invited representatives of Omole Estate Management to meet with the Commissioner of Police through the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DFA) or the Command Public Relations Officer, CSP Hundeyin, on Monday, April 7, 2025, at 12 noon.
“The Lagos State Police Command is committed to justice and integrity in all official duties. We urge the Omole Estate Management and the general public to utilize appropriate channels for reporting and resolving incidents involving police personnel,” the release added.
The Command concluded by calling on all estate managements and residents across Lagos to continue to cooperate with the police in crime prevention and law enforcement efforts, assuring that mutual respect and professionalism remain its guiding principles.
