LASTMA Intercepts Reckless Driver After Fatal Hit-and-Run Attempt in Ogudu
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has confirmed the arrest of a reckless driver whose dangerous maneuver led to the death of a pedestrian along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, shortly after the Ogudu flyover inward Ifako.
The incident occurred when the driver of a Nissan Jeep with registration number KJA 354 ET attempted to overtake a 40-foot articulated container truck at high speed. The vehicle lost control in the process, struck an unsuspecting male pedestrian, and rammed into the central median of the expressway.
Instead of helping the victim, the motorist allegedly tried to flee the scene. LASTMA officials, who were stationed in the area, quickly intercepted and apprehended him. Simultaneously, officers coordinated the rescue and medical evacuation of the injured pedestrian.
However, reports later confirmed that the pedestrian succumbed to his injuries.
The suspect was handed over to the Ogudu Police Division for further investigation, while the badly damaged vehicle was also towed to the station.
Despite the crash occurring near the ongoing rehabilitation works at the Ogudu–Ifako bridge intersections, LASTMA personnel ensured traffic flow was not disrupted, preventing further accidents or congestion.
The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, commended the swift response of his officers, describing their actions as gallant and professional. He, however, warned motorists against speeding and dangerous driving practices, stressing that such recklessness endangers not only drivers but also pedestrians and other innocent road users.
“Excessive speeding and indiscriminate maneuvering on our highways are unacceptable. Motorists must exercise caution, ensure the road is clear, and prioritize safety before overtaking or making diversions,” he stated.
The Authority reiterated its commitment to preserving human life, enforcing traffic discipline, and maintaining order across Lagos State roads.
