FAAN Launches Investigation Into Airport Security Breach Involving Musician Ayinde Marshal
The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has commenced a formal investigation into an incident involving popular musician Ayinde Marshal, who allegedly breached aviation security protocols at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.
According to an official statement released on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, by FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Obiageli Orah, the incident occurred on Monday, August 5, during boarding for a ValueJet Airlines flight (VK 201) bound for Lagos.
Preliminary findings revealed that the musician, identified as a passenger on the flight, attempted to board the aircraft with an unverified liquid substance in a flask, contravening established aviation security regulations. “The passenger was scheduled to board the morning flight to Lagos operated by ValueJet Airlines. During boarding, he attempted to carry an unidentified liquid on board despite repeated warnings from Aviation Security personnel and the flight captain,” the statement noted.
FAAN confirmed that the liquid exceeded the 100ml limit allowed in hand luggage, in violation of international security standards, including Nigeria’s National Civil Aviation Security Programme and ICAO Annex 17. The substance, later identified as alcohol, was not medically declared, as required under the regulations.
Tensions flared when the passenger allegedly refused to comply with further security checks and proceeded to spill the contents of the flask on an airline security officer. “An airline security officer requested the passenger to step aside for additional clarification. The passenger refused and poured the liquid on the officer. The captain intervened but was met with the same resistance. She subsequently ordered the closure of the aircraft door once boarding was complete,” FAAN stated.
The situation reportedly escalated further when Ayinde Marshal moved to the front of the aircraft and declined to vacate the area, despite multiple appeals from the crew. He was later escorted off the aircraft by the Aviation Security (AVSEC) crime unit for questioning and subsequently released pending further investigation.
FAAN strongly condemned the disruption and stressed that the matter is under comprehensive review. “The Authority reiterates its unwavering commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all passengers, airline staff, and airport operations. No individual is above the law, and any action that endangers aviation procedures will not be condoned,” the agency said.
FAAN assured the public that appropriate measures would be taken, and any individuals found culpable would face consequences in line with existing laws and regulations.
