Fouad Oki Urges APC Leaders to End Crisis Over Lagos Speakership Change

 – A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Fouad Oki, has called on party leaders to put an end to the ongoing controversy surrounding the recent leadership change in the Lagos State House of Assembly. In an open letter addressed to the party’s leadership, particularly the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC) led by Prince Tajudeen Olusi, Oki emphasized the need for unity and respect for legislative independence.  

The letter, titled “Lagos Speakership: It’s Time to Stop All Shenanigans Surrounding the Change in Leadership Saga,” acknowledged that the decision to replace the former Speaker, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, had stirred mixed reactions within the party. While recognizing concerns about the process, Oki urged APC leaders to accept the outcome and move forward rather than allow internal strife to weaken the party.  

“It is important to acknowledge that perhaps there were missteps in engaging with party leadership prior to this decision. However, we must recognize that the decision has been made, and it stands as a fait accompli,” he stated.  

Oki stressed that the speakership transition had gained widespread support from various societal groups, including traditional rulers, civil society organizations, and human rights advocates. He warned that disregarding public sentiment could pose political risks for the party, especially among young voters.  

“The historical context and political culture of Lagos shape how parties respond to community feedback. Lagos is a cosmopolitan area with a strong tradition of grassroots activism. I earnestly wish that our party will be more inclined to engage with community members and incorporate their feedback into how we handle this keg of gunpowder,” he added.  

Citing the importance of public perception, Oki reminded APC leaders that political legitimacy is derived from the consent of the people. He urged the party to take public opinion seriously, as media reports have reflected the general acceptance of the legislative decision.  

“As politicians, we must respond to media coverage and public discourse, adjusting our positions or strategies based on how issues are perceived by the public. This we must take due cognizance of and act appropriately,” he cautioned.  

Oki concluded his letter by appealing to the party leadership to embrace reconciliation, prioritize the collective interests of Lagosians, and avoid further division within the APC.  

“I urge you to consider the implications of prolonging this discord. Let us not allow our internal disagreements to overshadow the greater goal of serving the people of Lagos and Nigeria as a whole,” he stated.  

The call by Oki highlights the growing need for stability within the Lagos APC, as party leaders navigate internal tensions while preparing for future electoral challenges.
