Protest Erupts in Niger State Over Soaring Living Costs and Economic Hardship

Fervent demonstration against rising living expenses, infuriated youths and women gathered in the Minna metropolis on Monday, blocking the Minna Bida Road at Kpakungu around 7.30am. The protest, sparked by the removal of fuel subsidies by the federal government, also voiced concerns about escalating food prices and the challenging economic conditions faced by residents.

Deputy Governor Yakubu Garba, addressing the agitated crowd, acknowledged the citizens’ hardships and assured them of the state government’s concerted efforts to alleviate their financial distress. He urged the protesters to remain calm, emphasizing ongoing measures to mitigate the economic burden.

The protesters, wielding placards bearing messages like ‘No Food,’ ‘We are Dying of Hunger,’ and ‘Save Our Families,’ expressed frustration with the escalating costs of essential needs. The blockade of Minna Bida Road disrupted vehicular movements, affecting commuters and hindering access to workplaces for individuals, including those employed by the National Examination Council (NECO) and the Federal University of Technology Minna.

Though the police attempted to disperse the demonstrators, they were met with resistance, highlighting the intensity of public sentiment regarding the soaring cost of living in Niger State.
