President Tinubu Announces 50% Slash in Yuletide  Fares

In a significant move to ease travel expenses during the festive season, President Bola Tinubu has greenlit a 50% reduction in interstate transport fares from December 21, 2023, to January 4, 2024. Commuters can also enjoy free rides on all train services within this period.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Mr. Dele Alake, during a press briefing at the Aso Rock Villa on Wednesday. Alake emphasized that the initiative aims to benefit Nigerians willing to travel, offering a 50% discount on public transport via mini and luxury buses. Additionally, all train services on their respective routes will be available at zero cost during the holiday season.

Commencing on Thursday, December 21, and concluding on January 4, 2024, this special presidential intervention involves collaboration between the Federal Government, the Ministry of Transportation, transporters, road transport unions, and the Nigerian Railway Corporation.

Alake assured that thorough discussions with relevant stakeholders have taken place, ensuring a seamless execution of the initiative. He pointed out that air travel is excluded from the initiative, clarifying that it is primarily targeted at the masses, with air transport considered a luxury.

“The initiative is for the masses. Air is luxury. The masses don’t use air transport. So they are our main target,” explained Alake. This move is expected to alleviate financial burdens for travelers during the holiday season.
