The All Progressives Congress (APC) has reportedly selected Hon. Damilola Sonayon-James as the running mate to Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, a development that has generated excitement across Badagry and Lagos State.
The announcement has been widely welcomed by stakeholders, particularly in Badagry, where many see the nomination as recognition of the area’s contributions to the political development of Lagos State.
Hon. Damilola Sonayon-James is a respected politician, community development advocate, and sustainability strategist. She currently serves as the Lagos APC Deputy Woman Leader and has built a reputation for grassroots engagement, youth development, and women empowerment initiatives across various communities in the state.
A native of Badagry, Damilola hails from the royal family of Kweme Kingdom. She is the granddaughter of the late Oba Afolabi Ogungbe James and the daughter of the late Hon. Bolarinwa Sonayon James, a former member of the Federal House of Representatives.
Her educational journey reflects a strong commitment to leadership and service. She attended Lagos State Model College, Kankon, before obtaining a degree in Business Management and Human Resources from the University of Hull, United Kingdom. She later earned a Master’s degree in Social Work (Community Development) from Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH).
Professionally, Sonayon-James has worked across several sectors, including human resources, transport management, logistics, governance consulting, and community development. She previously served as Supervisory Councillor for Agriculture and Social Services in Badagry West LCDA, where she championed impactful projects aimed at improving the lives of residents.
One of her notable initiatives, the “Light Up Project,” provided solar-powered lighting to rural communities, enhancing safety and improving living conditions for many residents. Through the BSJ Foundation, she has also led humanitarian interventions focused on youth empowerment, women development, sanitation, and educational support.
Her political journey has been marked by dedication to public service and grassroots mobilization. Having contested for leadership positions and remained actively involved in community advancement, her emergence is seen by many as a reflection of the growing recognition of women in leadership and governance.
