The Katsina State Government has announced the death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar while in the custody of bandits, describing the development as a tragic loss to the state and the nation.
The announcement was made on Friday in a statement issued by the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Dr. Nasiru Mu’azu, who disclosed that the retired senior military officer died from complications arising from diabetes and hypertension during his captivity.
According to the government, sustained efforts were made by the state administration and security agencies to secure the release of the retired general, but the situation ended tragically.
“The deceased retired general died a natural death from complications of diabetes and hypertension,” the statement noted.
The government described the abduction and subsequent death of Major General Abubakar as a painful loss not only to his family and Katsina State but also to Nigeria, considering his years of service and contributions to national security.
Governor Dikko Umaru Radda expressed deep sorrow over the incident, describing it as a dark moment and a stark reminder of the persistent security challenges confronting parts of the country.
He extended his condolences to the bereaved family and prayed for the peaceful repose of the late officer’s soul.
The governor also reaffirmed the commitment of the Katsina State Government to working closely with the Federal Government and security agencies to ensure that those responsible for the abduction are apprehended and brought to justice.
Radda assured residents that his administration remains resolute in its determination to combat banditry and other criminal activities threatening lives and property across the state.
He further urged citizens to continue supporting security agencies through the provision of credible information and cooperation in the ongoing fight against insecurity.
