Wema Bank Reports 231% Surge Profit Before Tax ₦101.2 Billion H1 2025

Wema Bank Plc, Nigeria’s oldest indigenous bank and the pioneer of Africa’s first fully digital bank, ALAT, has posted a stellar performance in its unaudited half-year financial results for 2025, recording a Profit Before Tax (PBT) of ₦101.2 billion, a remarkable 231% increase from the ₦30.55 billion recorded in H1 2024.

According to the financial statement submitted to the Nigerian Exchange Group (NGX), the Bank’s Gross Earnings also rose by 70% to ₦303.20 billion (H1 2024: ₦178.63 billion), underpinned by strong growth in both Interest Income—up 65% to ₦240.12 billion—and Non-Interest Income, which soared by 91% to ₦63.08 billion.

The Bank’s total assets climbed to ₦3.96 trillion in H1 2025 from ₦3.59 trillion in the same period last year, while its deposit base grew by 3% to ₦2.60 trillion. Loans and advances increased by 19% to ₦1.426 trillion, with a maintained Non-Performing Loan (NPL) ratio of 3.17%, demonstrating Wema Bank’s focus on quality lending and risk management.

Commenting on the impressive results, Wema Bank’s Managing Director and CEO, Moruf Oseni, described the performance as a continuation of the Bank’s strong growth trajectory. “Just halfway through 2025, we’ve already achieved nearly 99% of our full-year PBT for 2024. For us, this is just the beginning,” he said.

He attributed the success to the Bank’s resilience, strategic focus, and 80-year legacy of redefining possibilities in the Nigerian banking sector.

Additional key metrics from the H1 2025 results include:

  • Return on Average Equity (ROAE): +60.40%
  • Return on Average Assets (ROAA): +4.64%
  • Capital Adequacy Ratio (CAR): +13.68%
  • Cost-to-Income Ratio: +47.55%

These figures reflect Wema Bank’s operational efficiency, prudent financial management, and its strengthened commitment to delivering long-term value to stakeholders.
