A bid to strengthen Nigeria’s entrepreneurial landscape, Wema Bank has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN). This strategic partnership aims to train and empower 800,000 micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) across the country, driving growth, innovation, and economic sustainability.
The MoU signing ceremony, which took place recently, marks a significant step in fostering collaboration between the financial sector and government agencies to support the backbone of Nigeria’s economy — its small businesses.
According to Wema Bank’s Managing Director, the partnership aligns with the bank’s mission to provide tailored financial solutions, capacity-building programs, and digital tools that enable entrepreneurs to scale their businesses. He emphasized that the bank’s support goes beyond traditional banking, as it seeks to equip MSMEs with the skills and resources needed to thrive in a competitive market.
In his remarks, the Director-General of SMEDAN highlighted the agency’s commitment to creating an enabling environment for small businesses by providing access to training, funding opportunities, and business development services. He expressed confidence that the collaboration with Wema Bank would bridge critical gaps in financial literacy, digital adoption, and access to credit for MSMEs.
The initiative will feature business clinics, workshops, and digital literacy programs tailored to address the unique challenges faced by small businesses. Entrepreneurs will also benefit from Wema Bank’s innovative digital banking platforms, which offer seamless payment solutions, loans, and investment opportunities.
With this partnership, both Wema Bank and SMEDAN reaffirm their dedication to driving inclusive economic growth by empowering Nigeria’s vibrant business community. The goal is not only to boost the productivity of 800,000 MSMEs but also to create jobs, stimulate innovation, and enhance the nation’s overall economic development.
This collaboration signals a renewed hope for entrepreneurs seeking financial support and strategic guidance, reinforcing the vital role of public-private partnerships in shaping Nigeria’s economic future.
