TCN Responds: Grid Disturbance, Ongoing Repairs to Improve Stability
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has reported a disturbance in the national power grid, which occurred at approximately 11:29 am today. This incident, marked by a sudden rise in frequency from 50.33Hz to 51.44Hz, temporarily disrupted power supply across several regions. TCN’s technical teams responded immediately, successfully restoring power to the Abuja Axis within 28 minutes, with efforts continuing in other areas to stabilize the grid.
According to TCN, the frequency spike resulted from an issue at one of the company’s substations, which was promptly shut down to prevent further complications. The incident occurs as TCN is also engaged in extensive repair work and critical upgrades on several high-priority transmission lines and substations. These projects include work on the 330kV transmission lines along the Shiroro-Mando axis, major enhancements at the Jebba Transmission Substation, and the restoration of the second Ugwuaji-Apir 330kV transmission line.
In recent weeks, TCN submitted an investigative report on previous grid collapses, outlining weaknesses within the transmission system. As part of a comprehensive plan to address these challenges, TCN has begun implementing technical and strategic interventions, guided by the committee’s recommendations. These measures aim to improve grid stability and resilience, even as repair work continues.
While these efforts are critical for long-term grid reliability, TCN warns that intermittent instability may persist until all major repair and upgrade projects are completed. “We acknowledge the impact of these disruptions and ask for the understanding and patience of the public during this challenging period,” the company stated.
The TCN emphasized its commitment to enhancing the nation’s electricity supply, recognizing that a stable grid is vital for Nigeria’s socio-economic growth. The organization assured the public that it is actively addressing infrastructure vulnerabilities, including vandalized transmission lines, as part of a broader initiative to ensure long-term grid stability.
