PRESIDENT TINUBU CELEBRATES GENERAL GOWON ON HIS 90TH BIRTHDAY
Tribute to General Yakubu Gowon at 90
On October 19, 2024, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu paid tribute to General Yakubu Gowon, celebrating his 90th birthday. In his message, President Tinubu described General Gowon as an extraordinary statesman and one of Nigeria’s longest-serving leaders, who made invaluable contributions to the nation’s development.
Reflecting on General Gowon’s journey, President Tinubu highlighted his remarkable rise to leadership at the age of 32, following his training at the prestigious Sandhurst Military Academy. As head of state, General Gowon played a significant role in the reconstruction of Nigeria after the civil war. His “No victor, no vanquished” policy fostered national healing and reconciliation.
Among his many achievements, President Tinubu recognized General Gowon’s establishment of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in 1975, noting that his legacy continues to shape regional unity and cooperation. Tinubu further emphasized how General Gowon has remained a trusted advisor, offering counsel on matters of national importance, particularly during diplomatic tensions with Sahelian states.
Beyond his political and military service, President Tinubu commended General Gowon’s continued dedication to Nigeria through his “Nigeria Prays” program, which promotes peace, religious tolerance, and unity across the country.
