The Alumni Association of the Nigerian Institute of Journalism (NIJ) has dissolved its long-standing Executive Committee and inaugurated a Central Working Committee (CWC) to steer the affairs of the association for the next six months, during which a fresh electoral process will be conducted.
The resolution was reached at the just-concluded NIJ Alumni General Meeting held in a hybrid format, with 31 members physically present and 29 others participating virtually. The well-attended meeting reflected renewed commitment among members to reposition the alumni body for greater impact and inclusivity.

The outgoing executive, which had served since 2016 under the leadership of Dr. Sanya Awosan, was commended for its dedication, resilience, and contributions to the growth of the association over the years. Members acknowledged the stability and continuity the executive provided while noting the need for a transition to usher in a new phase of leadership.
A motion was subsequently moved and adopted for the dissolution of the National Executive Council to pave the way for a transitional structure. In its place, a Caretaker Committee—also referred to as the Central Working Committee—was constituted and mandated to oversee the administration of the alumni body for six months. The committee is also tasked with instituting a fresh Electoral Commission that will conduct credible elections to fill vacant offices.
The newly constituted Caretaker Committee is chaired by Mr. Mathew Idowu, with members including Mr. John Odiboh, Mr. Alex Akao, Mr. Dimeji Kayode-Adedeji, Mr. Babatunde Tailor, Mr. Kasali Akinwale, Amb. Chika Nnamani, and Amb. Oluwayomi Oluwapelumi, who will serve as Secretary.
In his remarks on behalf of the new CWC members, Mr. Alex Akao delivered a vote of thanks, appreciating members for the confidence reposed in the committee and pledging transparency, inclusiveness, and a smooth transition process.
Mr. Muyiwa Akintunde also commended the school authorities for their support in facilitating the meeting, describing the gesture as a testament to the enduring bond between the institute and its alumni.
The resolutions reached at the General Meeting signal a new chapter for the NIJ Alumni Association, with stakeholders expressing optimism that the transitional committee will lay a solid foundation for a more vibrant, accountable, and forward-looking alumni body.
