NAPTIP Suspends Staff Over Alleged Sexual Exploitation
In a decisive move against sexual misconduct, the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has suspended Mr. Akwaowo Jonah Emmanuel, the chief driver attached to its Uyo Zonal Office, over allegations of sexual violations and exploitation of female suspects, including minors, under the agency’s custody.
According to a statement released by NAPTIP’s Press Officer, Mr. Vincent Adekoye, the agency took swift action following an internal investigation into the accusations against Emmanuel. The embattled officer is accused of coercing female suspects into sexual acts in exchange for their release.
The statement, contained in a letter titled “Update and Proactive Response by the Management of NAPTIP on the Alleged Sexual Harassment of Victims by Mr. Jonah Akwaowo Emmanuel,” emphasized the agency’s zero tolerance for misconduct. It noted that Emmanuel was issued a query on January 16, 2025, and subsequently faced an inquiry panel that gathered testimonies from victims and witnesses.
Following the findings of the committee, NAPTIP’s management decided to suspend Emmanuel without pay effective February 6, 2025, pending a final decision from the Senior Staff Committee, which will determine further disciplinary measures in line with the Public Service Rules.
Reacting to the development, an Abuja-based human rights lawyer, Barrister Jacob Udobang, called for a thorough and impartial investigation. He revealed that his legal firm had earlier petitioned the agency, exposing alleged illicit activities by some staff at the Uyo Zonal Office and urging the case to be transferred to NAPTIP’s headquarters for fairness.
“We are closely monitoring the situation and collaborating with partners. If we do not see a firm and transparent resolution, we are prepared to hold a world press conference to ensure justice is served,” Udobang stated.
NAPTIP’s Director General, Binta Adamu Bello, reassured the public that the agency remains committed to upholding integrity and protecting victims. She affirmed that if Emmanuel is found guilty, he will face the full weight of the law, including possible prosecution.
The suspension underscores NAPTIP’s resolve to root out unethical behavior within its ranks and maintain public trust in its mandate to combat human trafficking and protect vulnerable individuals.
