Jigawa’s Free Education for Girls: A New Dawn for Women Empowerment

In a transformating move aimed at transforming the lives of women and girls, the Jigawa State Government has declared free education for all female indigenes in state-owned institutions, from primary school to the PhD level.

The initiative, spearheaded by Governor Umar Namadi, identifies the state’s commitment to gender equality and the empowerment of women through education, irrespective of their chosen fields of study.

Announcing the development, Jigawa State Commissioner for Higher Education, Professor Isa Chamo, highlighted the life-changing potential of the programme.

“This is a significant step towards promoting gender equality and empowering women through education. By providing free education to female indigenes, the Jigawa State Government is empowering women to take control of their lives, make informed decisions, and contribute meaningfully to the development of their communities,” Chamo said.

For many girls in the state, financial barriers have often stood between them and their dreams. With this initiative, those barriers are being dismantled. The government hopes that free education will serve as a beacon of hope for girls and women who once thought higher education was beyond their reach.

“We’re confident that this programme will have a lasting impact on the lives of our female students,” Chamo added, noting that the initiative would encourage more girls to pursue education without the fear of financial constraints truncating their aspirations.

The Executive Secretary of the Jigawa State Scholarships Board, Alhaji Sa’idu Magaji, praised the initiative as the culmination of persistent efforts by the state.

“The board has been working tirelessly to ensure the successful implementation of this programme. We believe that education is the key to unlock the potential of our female students, and we’re committed to supporting them every step of the way,” Magaji said.

For female students like Halima Musa, a secondary school student in Dutse, the announcement feels like a dream come true.

“I want to become a doctor, but my parents could barely afford to pay for my school fees. Now, I know I can reach my goals without worrying about money,” Halima said, her eyes glistening with hope.

This initiative is expected to produce a ripple effect across Jigawa State, inspiring more families to prioritize the education of their daughters and contributing to the broader development of communities.

As Jigawa blazes the trail with its free education policy for female indigenes, the state sends a powerful message: when women are empowered, society flourishes.
