Director-Nominee Rejects Tinubu’s Appointment
Urum Kalu Eke, the nominee from the South-East region of Nigeria, has declined the offer to become a member of the Central Bank of Nigeria CBN Board of Directors. The rejection came during the Thursday plenary session as the Senate initiated the confirmation process for the nominees.

President Bola Tinubu had nominated Eke, alongside four others, on February 13 for confirmation as members of the apex bank board. However, during the confirmation proceedings, former Governor of Abia State, Senator Orji Kalu, representing Abia North Senatorial District, informed the Senate that Eke had contacted him to reject the appointment. Eke cited potential conflicts with his current role as a consultant with the World Bank.
Senator Kalu stated, “The nominee told me this role would conflict with his job as a consultant to the World Bank, Federal Government agencies, and other private companies.”
Despite Eke’s refusal, the Senate proceeded to confirm the appointments of the other four nominees to the CBN Board of Directors. Those confirmed were Robert Agbede, Ado Yakubu Wanka, Professor Murtala Sabo Sagagi, and Mrs. Muslimat Olanike Aliyu.
The confirmation followed the presentation of a report on the nominee screening by the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance & Other Financial Institutions, Senator Adetokunbo Abiru. Abiru noted that Eke was not cleared by the Committee due to his failure to appear for screening.
The rejection of Eke’s nomination raises questions about the selection process and the considerations made in appointing individuals to key positions.
