In a decisive move to end the leadership crisis rocking the Lagos State House of Assembly, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed Speaker Mudashiru Obasa to retain his position, urging him to foster unity and carry his colleagues along in all decision-making processes.

The resolution followed a closed-door meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday, attended by Obasa and his fellow lawmakers. The session, which began around 2:50 pm and lasted nearly two hours, focused on reconciling the warring factions within the Assembly.

According to sources who spoke with Vanguard, President Tinubu emphasized the need for peace and warned Obasa against sidelining his colleagues. He also instructed the Speaker to withdraw the court case related to the dispute, signaling a clear call to put an end to the internal conflict.

Following the meeting, Obasa declined to speak with waiting State House correspondents, while the lawmakers, in a show of loyalty to the President, were heard chanting “On your mandate, we shall stand” — a popular slogan among Tinubu’s supporters — as they exited the Villa in high spirits.

Confirming the outcome, a member of the Assembly, speaking anonymously, described the gathering as a “family meeting” where all sides agreed to work together. “Obasa is staying, and we have no choice but to obey the President,” the lawmaker said.

The source further revealed that President Tinubu cautioned Obasa, making it clear that any future grievances from the Assembly members could cost him his position. “The President said he should let peace reign,” the source added.

There are also unconfirmed reports that some lawmakers who had previously supported Obasa’s impeachment have since apologized following the President’s intervention.

Meanwhile, House of Representatives member James Faleke, who was present at the meeting, offered little detail, simply stating, “It went well.”

With the court case set to be withdrawn and a renewed call for cooperation among the lawmakers, the President’s intervention appears to have restored a fragile peace within the Lagos State House of Assembly.
