The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Federal Operations Unit (FOU) Zone ‘B’, has recorded a significant breakthrough in its ongoing fight against illegal wildlife trafficking, with the interception of two live pangolins along the Kano–Jigawa axis.

The seizure, which took place on March 12, 2026, at about 10:00 a.m., followed a routine stop-and-search operation by vigilant operatives of the Unit. The vehicle conveying the endangered animals was flagged down as part of a proactive enforcement exercise aimed at curbing smuggling activities within the zone.

Authorities disclosed that the operation aligns with the provisions of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), a global agreement designed to ensure that international trade does not threaten the survival of endangered species.

Upon interception, the pangolins—each weighing approximately 15 kilograms—were safely secured in appropriate cages and transported to the Unit’s headquarters in Kaduna for further examination and protection.

Speaking on the development, the Comptroller of FOU Zone ‘B’, Aminu Sule, ordered a comprehensive investigation to uncover the origin and intended destination of the trafficked animals. He reaffirmed the Unit’s zero-tolerance stance on wildlife crimes.

“This seizure sends a clear message that Zone ‘B’ will not be a transit point for wildlife traffickers,” he stated.

Pangolins, widely regarded as the most trafficked mammals in the world, are under severe threat due to illegal trade driven by demand for their scales and meat. The latest interception highlights the growing need for sustained enforcement and public awareness on biodiversity conservation.

The Nigeria Customs Service reiterated its commitment to upholding environmental laws and international obligations, stressing that the protection of endangered species remains a critical component of national and global ecological security.

Societal Concerns Perspective

This development underscores the urgent need for a multi-stakeholder approach involving security agencies, environmental advocates, and local communities to combat wildlife trafficking. Beyond enforcement, there is a pressing responsibility to educate citizens on the ecological and economic importance of preserving endangered species.

As Nigeria continues to strengthen its environmental governance, such proactive interventions serve as a reminder that safeguarding biodiversity is not just a legal duty, but a collective moral responsibility.
