The Federal Government of Nigeria has condemned Israel’s recent preemptive strike on Iran, which has triggered an alarming escalation of hostilities between the two nations. In a strongly worded statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Sunday, Nigeria expressed grave concern over the continued exchange of missile and aerial attacks between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the State of Israel, calling for an immediate cessation of violence.
According to the official statement signed by Ministry spokesperson Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, Nigeria warned that the unfolding situation threatens to destabilize the broader Middle East, endanger civilian lives, and undermine global security and economic stability.
“The Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria condemns Israel’s preemptive strike on Iran that has led to an escalation of hostilities… The continued cycle of retaliation not only endangers civilian lives but threatens to plunge the broader Middle East into further instability,” the statement read.
Reaffirming Nigeria’s long-standing commitment to peaceful coexistence, non-aggression, and multilateral diplomacy, the government urged both Iran and Israel to exercise maximum restraint and prioritize dialogue over confrontation. The statement also called on the United Nations Security Council and the wider international community to act swiftly in facilitating de-escalation and providing platforms for constructive engagement.
“Nigeria stands ready to support all genuine efforts aimed at de-escalating tensions and promoting peace in the region,” the government stated, adding that “military action is not a substitute for negotiation.”
The press release is Nigeria’s latest diplomatic response to growing instability in the Middle East and reflects the country’s ongoing advocacy for peaceful conflict resolution on the global stage.
