Why LASTMA Issues Stern Warning to Dispatch Riders on Traffic Compliance

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has issued a strong directive to dispatch and mail riders in Lagos, urging strict compliance with traffic regulations to ensure road safety and discipline.

This came during a courtesy visit by the National Union of Dispatch Riders and Mail Operators of Nigeria (NUDRMON) to the General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, at the agency’s Oshodi office. The meeting focused on fostering collaboration between both organizations to improve traffic compliance and professionalism among dispatch riders.

Mr. Bakare-Oki raised serious concerns over frequent traffic violations attributed to some dispatch riders, including illegal use of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridors, obstructive parking, and riding against traffic (“one-way”). He emphasized the need for dispatch riders to undergo proper training and urged NUDRMON to intensify efforts to educate its members on traffic laws and road safety.

He encouraged the Union to take advantage of training programs offered by LASTMA and the Lagos State Drivers’ Institute to equip riders with essential skills and knowledge for safer operations. Additionally, the GM outlined critical safety benchmarks for dispatch riders, including:

– Mandatory use of motorcycles with a minimum engine capacity of 200cc.

– Prohibition of overloading motorcycles with oversized or heavy items.

– Avoidance of reckless behaviors such as excessive speeding, “hit-and-run” incidents, and damaging other vehicles while navigating traffic.

In response, the Lagos State Chairman of NUDRMON, Mr. Oshoko Babatunde, acknowledged the concerns and unveiled plans to introduce a “Body Number” identification system for dispatch riders. This system assigns a unique ID to each rider, ensuring accountability and aiding in tracking traffic violations or missing consignments.

Mr. Babatunde also assured the public of the Union’s dedication to addressing complaints about dispatch riders. He highlighted NUDRMON’s commitment to enhancing service quality and professionalism within the sector.

The meeting underscored a shared vision between LASTMA and NUDRMON to foster safer roads, reduce traffic offenses, and elevate operational standards in Lagos State’s dispatch and mail delivery sector.
