Vice Chairman Alimosho Local Government Receives Appointment Letter, Replace Suspended Chairman

In a significant political development, the Vice Chairman of Alimosho Local Government, Mr. Akinpelu Johnson, has officially been appointed to assume the role of Acting Chairman, following the indefinite suspension of the current Chairman, Mr. Jelili Sulaimon. The appointment was confirmed through a letter issued by the Lagos State Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs, and Rural Development, dated October 8, 2024, and signed by Permanent Secretary Kikelomo Bolarinwa.

The letter, titled *‘Re: Suspension of Mr. Sulaimon Jelili, Chairman, Alimosho Local Government Area Resolution of the House,’* detailed the decision of the Lagos State House of Assembly, which indefinitely suspended Mr. Sulaimon in accordance with Section 24 of the Local Government Administration Law (Amendment) 2016. Mr. Johnson has been directed to take over immediately as the Acting Chairman.

The House of Assembly’s resolution follows various allegations against Mr. Sulaimon, leading to his suspension during a legislative session held on Monday. In the wake of the decision, the Assembly instructed the local council’s management, including the treasurer and other key officials, to provide full support to Mr. Johnson to ensure a smooth transition and effective governance.

The leadership of the Alimosho council has been embroiled in a series of controversies, including a recent attempt by a minority group of three councillors to suspend Mr. Johnson. However, this move was swiftly condemned by a majority of the council’s legislators, who issued a public statement denouncing the suspension as illegal and staged.

Four out of the seven councillors, including Deputy Leader Mojisola Fabusuyi Ayeni, Chief Whip Saheed Adejoke, and members Rasheed Semiu and Elizabeth Fashina, voiced their support for the newly appointed Acting Chairman in a joint statement. The councillors praised the intervention of the Lagos State House of Assembly and reassured stakeholders of their commitment to peace and progress within the local government.

The statement also emphasized the councillors’ alignment with the *Renewed Hope Agenda* of President Bola Tinubu and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s *THEMES+ Agenda,* pledging their full support for Mr. Johnson in steering the affairs of the local government.

Mr. Johnson’s appointment is seen as a step towards stabilizing leadership in Alimosho as the local government moves to address the challenges it faces. The public has been urged to remain calm as further updates will be provided in due course.

Signed by:

Councillor Mojisola Fabusuyi Ayeni (Deputy Leader, Ward D)

Councillor Saheed Adejoke (Chief Whip, Ward C)

Councillor Rasheed Semiu (Ward E)

Councillor Elizabeth Fashina (Ward F)
