It was indeed emotional and enlightening experience for members of the Lions Club District 404-B3 as they gathered for a unique event themed “Dinner in the Dark”, an initiative aimed at raising awareness about the daily challenges faced by the visually impaired.

The event held with solemnity and compassion, brought together Lions and guests to share a meal in total darkness mirroring the lived experience of millions of blind individuals around the world.

Seated at the high table were notable Lions including Lion Taiwo Amao, Chartered President of the Lagos Legend Lions Club; Lion Segun Owoade of Lagos Platinum Lions Club, who candidly shared how eating in darkness was a daunting task for him. “I couldn’t finish my plate,” he admitted, “but there was a blind person seated beside me who ate effortlessly without any assistance. That made me see the miracle of God in their strength. It made me appreciate them more.”

District Governor, Lion Dr. Jide Bello, used the opportunity to highlight the significance of the program. “This dinner is one of our ways of connecting with the visually impaired and understanding what they go through daily. Lions Clubs International has a key focus—to eradicate preventable blindness. Tonight, we aren’t just eating in the dark, we are walking in the shoes of others, even if for a moment.”

The event’s high point was the empowerment of two-year-old Aderinola, whose story touched the hearts of attendees. Through a district-led initiative, funds were raised to support her needs, and members present made additional donations in a powerful show of solidarity and charity.

Other dignitaries at the high table included Lion Adelaja Adeleye, First Vice District Governor (FVDG), and Mr. Mohamed Afegbua, a special guest from the Blind Colony, who praised the event’s sensitivity and mission. Entertainment for the night was equally inspiring, featuring performances by visually impaired artists, further demonstrating the talent and resilience within the community.

Speaking to Societal Concerns, Princess Ifeanyi, a guest at the event, reflected emotionally: “Eating in the dark felt like I was trapped in a pit. I had no direction. It gave me a glimpse into what the blind face daily. I was moved to tears—it reminded me of my mother.”

Lion Abiodun Kareem, Secretary of the Organizing Committee, emphasized the significance of the initiative. “Dinner in the Dark is one of our club’s core values and has been observed since 1991. This marks the second edition under District 404-B3. We commend the efforts of our chairperson, Lion Judith Adeyelu Kudeso, and all committee members who worked tirelessly to bring smiles to the faces of our blind friends.”

In her appreciation remarks, Chairperson Lion Judith Adeyelu thanked all sponsors and reaffirmed the club’s commitment to advocacy, inclusion, and support. “It takes a lot to put this together. But it’s worth every moment if it brings awareness and inspires action. We remain open to sponsorship and partnerships, especially from government agencies, to broaden our impact.”

The event has not only celebrate empathy but served as a clarion call for increased support for the visually impaired, reminding all present of the power of compassion, understanding, and service.
