The Executive Chairman of Somolu Local Government, Hon. Abdul Hamed Salawu, was on Monday, March 10, 2025, presented with the Community Service Distinguished Award at the new ultra-modern council secretariat.
The prestigious award, originally scheduled to be handed over during the December Societal Concerns Symposium — themed “Understanding and Preventing Femicide in Our Community” at the LCCI Hall, Alausa, Lagos — was presented to Hon. Salawu in recognition of his unwavering commitment to selfless service, community engagement, and grassroots development.
Due to his absence at the main event, organizers of the symposium, Societal Concerns, deemed it necessary to formally deliver the honor at the council’s secretariat, highlighting the chairman’s proactive leadership and impactful initiatives within Somolu.
In his acceptance speech, Hon. Salawu expressed gratitude for the recognition, noting that the award serves as both an encouragement and a call to further deepen his efforts in advancing the welfare of his people.
“This award is not just for me but for the entire people of Somolu. It is a testament to what we can achieve when leadership is driven by the needs of the community. I remain committed to fostering development, promoting inclusivity, and tackling societal challenges head-on,” he said.
He applauded the organizers for shedding light on the critical issue of femicide and pledged the council’s support in raising awareness and implementing preventive measures within the community.
The Societal Concerns Symposium had brought together key stakeholders, policymakers, and community leaders in December 2024 to discuss strategies for combating gender-based violence, with the Community Service Distinguished Award designed to honor leaders championing social causes and uplifting their communities.
Hon. Salawu’s recognition underscores his dedication to responsive governance, youth empowerment, and community-driven initiatives, reinforcing his reputation as a people-centered leader.
The event at the secretariat was attended by council members, community leaders, and representatives of Societal Concerns, who commended the chairman’s hands-on approach to addressing the pressing needs of Somolu residents.
