Opposition Parties Woo Obasa Amid Political Turmoil, LP Opens Doors for 2027 Elections

The political landscape in Lagos is heating up as opposition parties, including the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party (LP), reportedly intensify efforts to lure former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, into their ranks following his controversial impeachment.

Obasa was removed from office on January 13, 2025, after a majority of lawmakers voted against him over allegations of misconduct and financial misappropriation. His impeachment has since deepened internal divisionswithin the Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), sparking debates among members of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC)—the highest decision-making body of the party in the state.

Despite his removal, Obasa has remained defiant, insisting that due process was not followed and describing the corruption allegations as “impossible.” The former Speaker’s loyalists argue that his impeachment was politically motivated, pointing fingers at internal power struggles ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Sensing an opportunity in the APC crisis, the Labour Party (LP) has reportedly opened its doors to Obasa, hinting at a possible alliance for the 2027 elections. LP leaders believe that bringing Obasa into their fold could strengthen their influence in Lagos politics, particularly in Agege, his stronghold. Sources within the party claim discussions have begun, with LP positioning itself as an alternative platform for the former Speaker.

The PDP, which has struggled to gain a stronghold in Lagos over the years, is also said to be exploring avenues to win over Obasa, seeing him as a political asset who could help them challenge the APC’s dominance in the state.

Obasa’s impeachment has further divided the APC leadership in Lagos, with some GAC members opposing the decision. Senator Anthony Adefuye and Chief Muraina Taiwo criticized the impeachment, drawing backlash from Senator Musiliu Obanikoro*l, who dismissed their stance as “childish and inconsequential.”

Following Obasa’s removal, Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, the former deputy speaker, was sworn in as the new Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly. However, tensions remain high within the party, with fears that the crisis could weaken APC’s grip on Lagos State before the next election cycle.

As the 2027 elections approach, Obasa’s next political move will be closely watched. If he decides to align with the Labour Party or PDP, it could reshape the political dynamics in Lagos,  challenging the long-standing dominance of the APC.
